CU Boulder hosts Second Amendment conference

The University of Colorado Law School will host the 34th Annual Ira C. Rothgerber Jr. Conference this Friday in Boulder, in partnership with the Byron R. White Center for the Study of American Constitutional Law and the GIFFORDS Law Center. Titled “Modern Weapons, Historical Tradition, and the Second Amendment,” the daylong event will convene scholars, practitioners and policymakers at the Wolf Law Building. In-person and virtual attendance are available via advance registration.

The conference comes amid continued evolution in Second Amendment jurisprudence, as courts apply a history-focused analytical framework to contemporary firearms regulation. Panels will examine legal questions central to litigation and policy debates, including the future of assault weapon bans, the regulation of emerging technologies such as 3D-printed firearms and constitutional issues surrounding armed protests and public safety.

Additional discussion will focus on how courts are interpreting and applying the Supreme Court’s “historical tradition” test to modern gun laws. Featured speakers include Ian Ayres, Helen Norton, and Saul Cornell. The conference is free and open to the public, offers six CLE credits for Colorado attorneys and will conclude with a reception.
