
Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. selected nine new chairs of Judicial Conference committees and extended the terms of four current chairs by one year. The appointments took effect Oct. 1 unless otherwise noted.
The appointments and extensions include:
- Chief Judge Michael A. Chagares of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals succeeded Chief Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton of the 6th Circuit as chair of the Executive Committee.
- Chief Judge Jeffrey U. Beaverstock of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama succeeded Bankruptcy Judge Julie A. Manning of Connecticut as chair of the Committee on Audits and Administrative Office Accountability.
- Judge Robert R. Summerhays of the Western District of Louisiana succeeded Judge William L. Osteen Jr. of the Middle District of North Carolina as chair of the Committee on the Administration of the Bankruptcy System.
- Judge Trevor N. McFadden of the District of Columbia succeeded Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove of the Eastern District of Kentucky as chair of the Committee on Court Administration and Case Management. His appointment took effect July 19.
- Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the Northern District of Iowa succeeded Judge Edmond E. Chang of the Northern District of Illinois as chair of the Committee on Criminal Law.
- Judge Sara L. Ellis of the Northern District of Illinois succeeded Judge Cathy Seibel of the Southern District of New York as chair of the Committee on Defender Services.
- Judge Darrin P. Gayles of the Southern District of Florida received a one-year extension as chair of the Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction.
- Judge Steven C. Seeger of the Northern District of Illinois succeeded Judge Beth Phillips of the Western District of Missouri as chair of the Committee on Financial Disclosure.
- Judge Michael Y. Scudder Jr. of the 7th Circuit received a one-year extension as chair of the Committee on Information Technology.
- Judge David G. Campbell of the District of Arizona received a one-year extension as chair of the Committee on International Judicial Relations.
- Judge Mark R. Hornak of the Western District of Pennsylvania succeeded Judge Richard J. Sullivan of the 2nd Circuit as chair of the Committee on Judicial Security.
- Bankruptcy Judge Michelle M. Harner of Maryland succeeded Bankruptcy Judge Rebecca Connelly of the Western District of Virginia as chair of the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules.
- Judge Glenn T. Suddaby of the Northern District of New York received a one-year extension as chair of the Committee on Space and Facilities.
The Judicial Conference is the policymaking body for the federal court system and considers administrative and policy matters affecting the federal judiciary.
