Ex-funeral home operator sentenced to 18 years for fraud

Carie Hallford, former co-owner of Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Prosecutors detailed that Hallford and her ex-husband, Jon Hallford, collected payments from grieving families for cremations and other funeral services but instead provided urns filled with concrete or fake ashes, leaving nearly 200 bodies improperly stored at the funeral home.

The couple also fraudulently obtained nearly $900,000 in COVID‑19 relief funds, spending the money on personal luxuries rather than legitimate business needs. In addition to prison time, Carie Hallford was ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution. She will serve three years of supervised release. Jon Hallford previously received a 20‑year federal sentence on related charges, along with state convictions for corpse abuse.

Authorities condemned and demolished the Penrose facility due to health hazards from the improperly stored remains, emphasizing the severity of the Hallfords’ misconduct.
