Ex-state senator fined, sentenced to probation and community service

Former state Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis was sentenced Friday to two years of probation and 150 hours of community service and fined $3,000. If Lewis completes an additional 100 hours of public service, the fine will be waived.

On Jan. 28, Lewis was convicted of four felony charges: one count of attempting to influence a public servant and three counts of forgery.

In January 2025, during an investigation by the state Senate Committee on Ethics, Lewis forged several letters supposedly written by former aides to refute allegations she was mistreating her staff.

“This case should send the message that elected officials will be held accountable when they break the law and violate the public’s trust,” Denver District Attorney John Walsh said. “Sonya Jaquez Lewis will now pay a price for behavior that simply cannot and will not be tolerated in our community. I want to thank the prosecutors, investigators, victim advocates and legal administrative assistants in my office, whose outstanding work brought about the successful resolution of this case.”

Chief Deputy DA Robert Nitido led the prosecution team for the Denver DA’s Office.
