Federal judiciary creates Supreme Court defender office

The U.S. federal judiciary has approved a new office dedicated to helping public defenders represent indigent criminal defendants before the Supreme Court. 

The initiative, called the Supreme Court Advocacy Project, will provide specialized legal support to improve the quality and coordination of defense work at the high court. Initially based in the Eastern District of Virginia federal public defender’s office, the program is expected to become an independent entity by 2028. 


The effort aims to give defense lawyers stronger institutional backing when arguing cases before the court, where government attorneys typically have greater resources.
