Gov. Polis appoints Sean J. Lacefield to 19th Judicial District

Gov. Jared Polis on May 12 appointed Sean J. Lacefield to the 19th Judicial District, effective July 1, 2026. The appointment fills a new judgeship created by Senate Bill 25-024.

Lacefield has served as supervising deputy state public defender in the Appellate Division of the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office since 2021, where his practice focuses on criminal appeals. He previously served as deputy state public defender in the office’s Appellate Division from 2019 to 2021 and from 2013 to 2017.


Before returning to the public defender’s office, Lacefield was an associate at Berg Hill Greenleaf Ruscitti LLP from 2017 to 2019 and an associate and member at Houtchens Houtchens & Greenfield LLC from 2004 to 2013.

Lacefield earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Colorado in 2000 and a law degree from University of Colorado Law School in 2004.
