Justices Kagan and Barrett appear before Congress to discuss budget request

Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett appeared before House and Senate subcommittees on July 14 to address the Supreme Court’s budget request. Watch their live testimony.

The justices discussed the court’s approximately $228 million operating budget request for the budget year that begins October 1.  The court is asking for an increase of $14 million from the previous year, to include the expansion of security, focusing on the court’s in-house police force and for security when the justices travel outside the Washington area.


In answers to questions presented by Congressional members, the justices also discussed specific security concerns; increases and decreases to the docket calendar; gifts to members of the judiciary, reporting and enforcement; AI and technology, among other subjects.
