Gov. Polis Appoints Anthony Baca to La Plata County Court

Gov. Jared Polis on Dec. 27 appointed Judge Anthony Baca to fill a vacancy on the La Plata County Court in the 6th Judicial District. The vacancy was created by the resignation of Judge Anne Woods and is effective immediately. 

Baca is a Dolores County Court judge in the 22nd Judicial District, a position he’s held since 2020. Since 2021, he’s also been a district court magistrate in the 22nd Judicial District serving Dolores and Montezuma counties. His docket consists primarily of criminal matters. 


Previously, Baca was the owner of Baca Consulting from 2015 to 2022, manager of the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System at the University of Denver from 2017 to 2018, an attorney at the Office of the Municipal Defender in Denver in 2016, an attorney at Mountain Legal, L.L.C. from 2011 to 2016 and assistant to the public defender at New Mexico Law Offices of the Public Defender from 2010 to 2011. 

Baca earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 2003 and his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 2009.
