Ryan Winter, Hall & Evans LLC

As a longtime civil defense litigator at Hall & Evans, Ryan Winter operates at a scale few attorneys match. At any given time, he maintains 75 to 100 active matters spanning routine personal injury claims to catastrophic cases with national exposure, while also holding multiple leadership roles at his firm.

Winter has defended hundreds of commercial and tort cases in state and federal courts, often involving allegations of wrongful death, traumatic brain injury and other life-altering injuries. He also handles complex economic loss disputes, including multimillion-dollar claims tied to property damage, construction defects and design failures.

“I have the best stories at any cocktail party,” Winter said. “There’s always a percentage of cases that are inherently interesting — the people, the facts, the circumstances.”

That range is part of the appeal. Representing regional and national businesses across sectors, from sports and recreation to product and professional liability, Winter rarely sees the same problem twice. “The variety keeps it interesting,” he said.

Winter’s work regularly places him in high-stakes roles, where he serves as supervising or contact partner on matters in which financial and reputational risk are significant. Across trials, appeals and dispositive motions, he has secured defense verdicts, summary judgments and appellate wins.

Beyond his litigation practice, Winter is a member of his firm’s executive team and board of directors, as well as chief marketing and mentoring officer. He focuses heavily on attorney development, emphasizing hands-on, case-driven training.

“The most important mentoring happens in real time,” he said. “Sitting down with an associate and walking through strategy, that’s where the learning really happens.”

Balancing that responsibility with a full caseload can be difficult. “Time is the biggest challenge,” he said. “But investing in the next generation of attorneys is essential.”

Over the course of his career, Winter has adapted to shifts in the legal landscape, from evolving client expectations to new technology. His firm is among those increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence into research and document review, while clients deploy their own tools to scrutinize billing and performance.

A University of Colorado Law School graduate, Winter clerked for the Colorado Supreme Court before building his career at Hall & Evans. He is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado and the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.
