U.S. District Judge Kato Crews Sworn Into Office on Jan. 12

U.S. District Judge Kato Crews, who became the district’s first Black magistrate judge in 2018, was sworn into office on Jan. 12 by Chief Judge Philip Brimmer.

Crews was nominated by President Joe Biden in February 2023 to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado to fill a vacancy created by Judge Raymond Moore. Crews was recommended by U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper.

On March 22, 2023, he was questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee on his record and judicial approach. Crews came with letters from his supporters including the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, the Asian-Pacific American Bar Association of Colorado and more.

Crews was confirmed by the Senate on Jan. 10 by a vote of 51 to 48.

Crews’ chambers will remain in C-250 of the Byron G. Rogers Courthouse, and his assigned courtroom will remain in C-201. Cases assigned to Judge Crews will continue to have his initials SKC.

A formal investiture will be planned for a later date.
